Sathi Leelavathi TamilYogi Review: The movie’s scenes of husband-wife quarrels had a lot of things to say about Sathi Leelavathi before it even got to its emotional moments: the bursts of laughter. There is an unforced energy for these confrontations, messy, playful, slightly dramatic, but honest enough to hit the mark in marriage to be funny as soon as you see it. This is a characteristic of the film. Director Tatineni Satya knows that this story doesn’t need to shock with twists and over-emotions to entertain.

Rather, the film is more of a realistic marital mess, witty humor and friendly chemistry between Lavanya Tripathi and Dev Mohan. Lavanya, in particular, is a welcome come back after a long hiatus, as she’s both emotionally vulnerable and comically at the right moment. The music doesn’t seem to make much difference, but the film’s vibrant presentation and its consistently divertive second half more than make up for it, making it a fun and family-friendly treat of a film that rarely loses its charming frivolity.

The story line is simple and common. Misunderstandings and differences start to cause problems for the lead couple after their marriage. When the husband decides that he wants a divorce, things get serious. The following is the ruckus that unfolds in the married life of the wife, with the emotional and funny twists and turns. The movie isn’t trying anything too groundbreaking, but it certainly has an idea of who it’s for. It is not a plot device, it doesn’t have to be a dramatic story with huge plot twists, and it doesn’t focus on marital drama, but on fun and the normal squabbles that many couples go through in their relationship.

Lavanya Tripathi’s comeback performance is impressive and she is definitely a lot of fun to watch throughout the movie. She pulls off the emotional moments with ease and also has the comedy a little bit in her as well. She is warm in her expression and the screen. She’s complemented by Dev Mohan throughout, especially in the lighter moments and when she’s arguing. Their chemistry is enjoyable, keeping the humour fresh throughout the movie.

The one thing one can say about the film is that there is a steady development in the comedy. Once it gets to its principal line, it takes about 20 minutes for things to calm down, but once they do, the fun doesn’t stop. There’s lots of laughs that go on and on and the interval block is one of the highlights of the film. The second half is also on a steady note, featuring enjoyable bits of comedy that will work well in theatres. Many of the situations depicted on film may resonate with married audiences, especially.

The film is neat and vibrant technically. The cinematography is colourful and enhances the overall lively atmosphere of the story. But the songs have little impact. The music doesn’t really linger in the mind after the movie and better music would have enhanced the emotional moments better.

The best thing about the film is that it was very clear about what it was doing. Sathi Leelavathi does not claim to be a hardcore drama nor one that delivers a clear-cut message. It just strives to entertain the family with humor, romance and funny, but somewhat relatable marital chaos, and that is largely achieved. For a comedy entertainer, the commercials delivered satisfactorily with very little to complain about.

Sathi Leelavathi is a no-brainer pick if someone is searching for a fun-filled romantic comedy with family/ spouse. While it is unlikely to truly redefine the genre, it’s more than enough laughs and feel-good moments to make the theatrical experience worth it.
